Blackstone Edge - 29th June 2008
Along the narrow Cross Top road from Askrigg to Muker, just past the first cattle grid there is a parking area on the left hand side - This is the start of todays walk.

A sign saying 'Beacon' Only marks the start of our route as we head west on a good track over Whitfield Fell, after around 2km the track bears north and we start to climb steadily until we see the large cairn marking the summit of Blackstone Edge.

Approaching the summit of Blackstone Edge 584m / 1916ft
Blackstone Edge summit cairn 584m.
We carry on walking north along the edge until after a short distance we pass through a gate and follow a path the short distance to the Beacon.
Gerry puts his new camera through its paces.

Retracing our steps back along Blackstone Edge we pick up a fence which bears off to the left, following this fenceline over rough boggy ground for about 2km in an easterley direction we arrive back at the road and another cattle grid about 1 km further north from our initial start point.

We cross the road and carry on following the fence for a further 1.5km until we pass Summer Lodge Tarn on our left and climb up onto Tarn Rigg.
  Tarn Currack
Heading south along Tarn Rigg we pass the small Beacon and head up onto The Fleak.
The Fleak 551m / 1807ft

We take a bearing and head southeast, descending some 100m through moorland and bogs to cross Turner Beck, then climbing back up to the road and the car parking area.

An easy and very pleasant walk as far as Blackstone Edge, after that the going gets more difficult as we follow the fence lines over moorland and bogs.

Total distance 7.25 miles / 11.5km approx.
